Plea to withdraw GO on user charges

August 26, 2010 07:24 pm | Updated 07:24 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Tax Payers' Association (TPA) has demanded that the State government withdraw GO 973 that directs the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to collect user charges for lifting of garbage.

The association described the GO as ‘undemocratic and unconstitutional'.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, TPA president V. Sambi Reddy said he proposal was ‘unlawful' as the VMC was already collecting property tax that includes charges for sanitation service.

Mr. Reddy said Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu ‘misguided' the government saying people were willing to pay the user charges. The TPA submitted a memorandum to the Mayor urging her to ask the government to scrap the GO.
