The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) will shortly pilot a 24X7 water supply project in select wards before scaling up the project to be implemented in all wards of the city.
Municipal Commissioner K. Ilambarithi, who returned after touring Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, where the scheme has been in existence for the last three years, told reporters that the pilot project would examine the feasibility of providing continuous water supply to domestic and commercial connections and would be completed in 6-8 months.
A fair mix of commercial and residential areas has been chosen for implementation of the pilot project. The demo wards include Auto Nagar, a commercial area, parts of Mangaldas Nagar and Sarada Colony.
There are about 5,000 connections in these areas and it is estimated that about 4-6 MLD of water would be required daily.
Metering
Under the project, all existing water lines would be refurbished, the customer connections would be upgraded and 100 per cent of metering would be done.
The pilot project would make a study of existing pipeline network, assess water zones, design new pressure zones and calibrate the new network.
The project is being implemented in Hubli-Dharwad by Karnataka Urban Sector Improvement Project.
The GMC gets about 90 MLD daily and the laying of second water pipeline has augmented the water supply.
Dr. Ilambarthi appeared confident that the project would meet public approval.
“Continuous water supply has many advantages like reduction in leakages, accurate measurement of water flow, improvement in general health and longer life of infrastructure,” Dr. Ilmabarthi said.
