Animal lovers and pet owners got their dogs and other domestic animals vaccinated at various centres established by the Department of Animal Husbandry on the World Zoonosis Day.
Pet owners brought dogs belonging to different breeds to the vaccination camp set up at the Vijaya Dairy parlour at Lenin Centre. People passing by stopped to look at the different breeds, ranging from German Shepherd, pugs to Dalmatians.
“Several diseases are transmitted from animals to humans, causing mortality and morbidity,” Assistant Veterinary Surgeon M. Syam Sundhar said. It was the duty of all persons keeping animals to get them vaccinated for these diseases, he added.
Currently, rabies is considered most dangerous. Rabid dogs attack hundreds of people, many of them children, leading to their death.
Rabies would affect the nervous system of humans. It cannot be treated once the symptoms appeared, Dr. Syam Sundhar said.
Plague was another dangerous disease that was spread by animals. The Indian Institute of Jeevakarunyam and Research launched its ambulance service for sick animals.
