Sri Vijaya Nama Ugadi was celebrated in Krishna district with pomp and gaiety on Thursday. People thronged temples to pray for prosperity during the year.
District Collector Buddha Prakash M. Jyothi led people and officials in celebrating the Telugu new year at Machilipatnam and savoured the ‘Ugadi pachhadi’ along with officials.
‘Panchanga sravanam’ was organised on the occasion with Bhutla Suryanarayana Sarma Ghanapati reading out the Telugu lunar almanac.
Some of the prominent literary achievers were given awards and there was traditional ‘nadaswara’ performance.
Groundwater Deputy Director A. Varaprasada Rao, DEO Devananda Reddy, and ZP CEO Kondaiah Sastry were given away awards for implementing the ‘Telugu bhasha’ in officials duties.
At Indrakeeladri, people queued up in large numbers from 2 a.m. to have darshan of goddess Kanakadurga. Later, temple Executive Officer K. Prabhakar Srinivas participated in the ‘Panchanga sravanam’ by Chintalapati Kutumbaraya Sastry.
People listened in rapt attention to what was there in store for them as Mr. Sastry read out the contents of the new almanac as part of the celebrations.
People wore new clothes and greeted each other and visited their friends and relatives. Many spent most of the morning time watching the ‘Panchanga sravanam’ and other programmes on the television.
At Indrakeeladri, ‘Vasanta Navaratri’ festivities began with temple authorities offering jasmine on the first day as part of ‘laksha pushparchana’.
