From a small local deity, the Penuganchiprolu Tirupathamma temple, 72 k.m. from Vijayawada city, has grown into a major pilgrim centre of the State.

It is one of the few temples in the State that has two Thirunals (temple festivals). One short thirunal of five-days is conducted in February and the longer thirunal is conducted in March. Devotees from all corners of the State come to pray to Tirupathamma for the fulfilment their vows.

According to temple assistant executive office Meda Gopala Rao the annual income had touched Rs.12 crore.

The earning of the temple in the form of ticket and prasadam sale during the most recent thirunal was Rs.24 lakh, Mr. Gopala Rao said.

Diamond crown

A diamond crown worth Rs.2 crore had been presented to the deity. It was still with the jewellers for final touches. A special strong room is being constructed for the safekeeping of the diamond crown.

Also being constructed is an ‘addala mandapam’ (Mirror Room) for offering special puja to the utsav idols of Tirupathamma and Gopaiah. It will be the best ‘addala mandapam ‘any temple would be having in the State on completion.

The mirrors would be of the best quality and the way they would be fixed would be unique, he said.

From a small temple without any ‘prakaram’ the temple authorities over two decades have developed a proper prakaram by removing several encroachments. The area around the temple has been levelled and covered with concrete for the benefit of pilgrims.

The temple authorities have also deposited Rs.5 crore with the government for the acquisition of 16 acres adjacent to the temple for developing more amenities for pilgrim. “We don’t have a proper bus-station and more dormitories and rooms are required for the pilgrims to take rest,” Mr. Gopala Rao said. The temple authorities also had plans of development of a gosala on their agenda.
