Verification process of the nominations which were filed by contestants for the post of sarpanch as well as ward members in the panchayat elections scheduled from July 23 to 31 has begun in Krishna district.

According to Krishna District Panchayat Department officials, a total of 5,223 nominations from aspirants for the sarpanch post were received while 27,982 candidates filed for ward member. However, the officials will finalise on July 17 the list of eligible candidates to contest in the panchayat poll. On the other hand, people are allowed to decide their sarpanch or ward member unanimously and the contestants are given opportunity to withdraw their nomination on or before July 17. Krishna District Superintendent of Police J. Prabhaka Rao said that as many as 813 panchayats were going to polls in three phases in the district and final list of panchayats is likely to be decided by the Panchayat Department officials very soon. The police too have identified some panchayats as sensitive and hypersensitive for providing security during the elections. On preparedness for elections, he said, “Eleven check-posts have bee set up and more will be established in select areas in collaboration with Revenue and Excise departments with a view to checking illegal flow of money from the borders of Krishna district.” In all 27,331 polling personnel will conduct elections to 968 gram panchayats in Krishna district. While the figure of presiding officers was 11,166, the number of other polling persons that would be involved was 16,165.
