Police on Tuesday seized four ‘panchaloha’ idols of Lord Srirama, his consort Sita Devi, Lakshmana Swamy and Sri Anjaneya Swamy, being transported illegally.

Following a tip-off, the police team led by Vinukonda Town Circle Inspector N. Srikanth Babu conducted a raid in the railway station and confiscated the idols, packed in a gunny bag, along with ‘vendi todugulu’, which are of antique value.

On observing the police, the accused abandoned the idols on the platform and managed to escape. A case has been registered and efforts are on to trace the thieves, said the CI.

“Four idols of Sri Sitarama Devasthanam located at Arundelpet, Guntur, were stolen a few months ago. We asked the temple authorities to verify the seized idols for identification. Information will be passed on to the Archaeology Department officials,” said Mr. Srikanth.
