‘Opposition parties trying to tarnish Modi image’

Prime Minister has laid a strong foundation for the country’s future, says BJP leader

BJP national spokesman G.V.L. Narasimha Rao has said corruption-free governance and inflation management are major victories of Narendra Modi government and asserted that the party is bound to grow stronger by endearing itself to the masses.

“Prime Minister Modi has laid a strong foundation for the country’s future and it is not fair to expect wonders overnight,” he said in a press conference here on Monday, taking a dig at the Congress and other Opposition parties for allegedly trying to tarnish the BJP’s image and that of Mr. Modi.

The vetoing of Trade Facilitation Agreement which is a part of the WTO regime, by the BJP government was a bold decision that guaranteed minimum support prices to farmers. Had the pact which was ratified by UPA-II been implemented, farmers would be deprived of MSP and that would compound their woes.

Mr. Modi struck a chord with world leaders during his tour of 18 nations. It was a phenomenal achievement as a few leaders, including the powerful Indira Gandhi, could not command such respect abroad.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Bank and many others schemes reposed the people’s confidence in the BJP, Mr. Rao claimed.

Asked what made the BJP take to the ordinance route for getting some crucial bills, like the new Land Acquisition Act, passed, Mr. Narasimha Rao said there was no impropriety in it. “The government is allowed by Constitution to issue ordinances. As far as the new LA Act is concerned, not a single inch of land will be gifted away to the corporate sector”, he said. However, he insisted that the government can acquire land for public good even if there is resistance.

Special status

While refusing to comment on the promises made to Andhra Pradesh at the time of bifurcation, including the special category status, Mr. Narasimha Rao said senior leaders Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley have already made the party’s stand on it clear and he had nothing to add to their statements.

BJP National Executive member Somu Veerraju, State General Secretary J. Syam Kishore, State spokesman G. Bhanuprakash Reddy and BJYM State President S. Vishnuvardhan Reddy were present.
