With garbage lifting vehicles breaking down frequently, taking a toll on the garbage clearance in the city, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner G. Veerapandian instructed officials to submit a report on the number of vehicles used for lifting garbage, their service period, mileage and etc.
He wanted officials to ensure vehicles with minor repairs were put to use at the earliest by taking up the repair works on a war footing. This move came in the wake of frequent complaints from the drivers about vehicles breaking down time and again. More than 500 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated in the city daily and it is dumped at different areas. The corporation spends close to Rs. 30 lakh on fuel bill for these vehicles every month.
The Corporation owns as many as 150 vehicles, including earth movers and trucks, which are involved in garbage lifting and transportation to dumping yard at Jakkampudi and other areas. Of these, about 100 vehicles are being used for lifting garbage and rest are lying defunct for the want of major and minor repairs. All these vehicles are parked at corporation’s vehicles depot at Purnanandampeta.
On Wednesday, Mr. Veerapandian inspected the depot and interacted with depot staff. He checked about the vehicles performance, their service period, mileage and etc. He instructed the officials to file a detailed report on these aspects at the earliest.
Later, he checked the attendance register of the staff working at the depot as well. More than 60 outsourced staff members work at the depot and they complained to the Commissioner that there was a delay in their salary payment. They also said that they were not being given leaves and weekly off regularly. The Commissioner asked the officials to clear the salary dues at the earliest and wanted them to grant weekly off , said a press release.
