Officials gear up for polls in island villages

The district election authorities and police have made elaborate arrangements for peaceful conduct of elections in inaccessible villages in Nagayalanka mandal.

As many as 4,782 people will cast vote in Edurumondi, Kishnapuram, Gollamanda, Nachugunta and Elichetladibba island villages in the Avanigadda Assembly constituency in the district on May 7.Inspector-General of Police (North Coastal Zone) Atul Singh and Eluru Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police Vikram Singh Mann reviewed security for the polls along with Krishna District Superintendent of Police J. Prabhakara Rao.

Mr. Prabhakara Rao said foolproof arrangements had been made to prevent any untoward incidents in inaccessible villages. Jana Maitri Sangams, formed by villagers and police constables, have been instructed to ensure peaceful polling in fishermen villages. “Police have held meetings with community heads and sarpanches for the smooth conduct of polls,” said Avanigadda Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Hari Rajendra Babu. In 2009, police had unearthed two buckets of country-made bombs in Edurumondi village. One of the bombs exploded at the Nagayalanka police station while it was being defused.
