Students of the 1991 batch of the NSM Public School have come together to undertake community service programmes under the banner of ‘meeNeSthaM’, a charitable trust formally launched on Sunday.

The constitution of ‘meeNeSthaM’-NSM Charitable Trust coincides with their silver jubilee reunion in 2016. Relying heavily on social networking sites to connect and plan the reunion, the former students decided to address key issues of education, health and sanitation in a project-based model.

As part of their decision, they distributed guide books to 500 tenth class students from seven municipal schools in city. These schools are Davuluri Subbarayamma Municipal High School, SURR Municipal High School, Gandhiji Municipal School, Padurthi Sundaramma Girls High School, APSR Municipal School, VMCH and Sri Karnati Rammohan Rao Municipal High School.

“By gaining access to these guide books, students could improve their performance in their exams,” said Surya Prasad Nalluru of the Charitable Society. In yet another project, the charitable body has partnered with BREAD, a non-profit organisation and launched libraries in five local Zilla Parishad high schools. “This is a pilot project and depending on its success, we intend to replicate it in more number of schools,” he said. Under a nutrition supplementation programme launched on a pilot basis for students of 10{+t}{+h}class in Davuluri Subbarayamma Municipal High School, the society members provide evening snacks to young learners (in addition to the government-sponsored mid-day meal). “The idea is to provide additional nutrition which will allow the children to stay back in school for longer hours and focus better on their exam preparation.

The cost of the evening snacks per head is more than the midday meal provided by the Government,” he said. The Society members also intend to launch a sanitation initiative very soon. Some of its active members include Ayesha Khatoon, A. Srikanth, R. Udaya Bhaskar, Y.Charan, A. Srinivas, M. Sangeetha, Satpreet Singh Lamba, P. Prasanna Kumar, Latha K., E. Ramesh and Bharath Nagarajan.
