Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu formally commissioned high speed Wi-Fi facility at the Vijayawada railway station on Thursday.

Mr. Prabhu along with Union Minister of State for Railway Manoj Sinha, Union Minister of State for Labour Bandaru Dattatreya and Railway Board Chairman A.K. Mittal and other members launched the facility through video remote link.

Vijayawada Central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, who attended the programme, thanked the South Central Railway (SCR) for the facility.

Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Kumar said Vijayawada Junction is one of the busiest stations in Indian Railways with over 400 trains passing through every day and about 17 million passengers visiting the station in a year.

“We installed 62 access points and 23 access switches. Wi-Fi service is backed by Gigabit capacity and the band width is provided with 1 Gig to start with and scalable,” said Mr. Ashok Kumar and thanked RailTel for providing the facility to Vijayawada passengers.

Unlimited period

“At present we are offering unlimited Wi-Fi facility for the passengers. The high speed Wi-Fi is faster than 4G and passengers can know the status of trains, availability of seats, reservation facility, position of moving trains and other information,” he said.

The Railways will equip more stations with Wi-Fi facility in the division by the end of this year, said Senior Divisional Commercial Manager N.V. Satyanarayana.

“The passengers need to do is to connect to ‘Railwire’ Wi-Fi network. On opening the browser, you will be asked to enter your mobile number. Once the passenger enters the number, he will receive a four-digit One Time Password (OTP), and ask the user to type the OTP number. Then the passenger is enabled with Wi-Fi facility for unlimited period,” Mr. Satyanarayana said.

Heads of various branches in the division attended the programme.
