Tomorrow (April 23) is a day of celebration for book lovers. It’s World Book Day and the over 100-year-old Sarvotham Grandhalaya near Benz Circle has decided to gift a book to all the aficionados who come seeking one.

The World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly, it’s a celebration of reading.

Designated by the UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading and marked in over 100 nations across the world, this day assumes greater significance in the current scenario when Internet and other electronic modes have pushed book-reading on the back-burner. Lanka Suryanarayana, an ardent book-lover who owns a personal library comprising nearly 65,000 books and over 4 lakh exclusive paper cuttings, in Guntur, will formally open the celebrations at the Grandhalaya at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

His huge personal collection has now been shifted to the Annamayya Grandhalayam, to provide public access to the accumulated wealth of knowledge.

“Over 5,000 books are up for the grabs in different categories. Nearly 2,000 of them are for kids and the distribution will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Raavi Sarada of the Grandhalaya.
