The Railway Budget presented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday evoked a mixed response from a cross section of society. While the emphasis on safety of passengers and improving amenities including provision of wi-fi facilities at railway stations was welcomed by the people, absence of concerete proposals relating to announcement of a new railway zone and new trains attracted their criticism.
Ganta Srinivasa Rao: . The proposal to introduce camera surveillance in women’s coaches, installation of bio-toilets and vacuum toilets is a welcome step.
N. Raghuveera Reddy: Calling the Railway Budget a disappointment, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Raghuveera Reddy said Central government had betrayed the State by neglecting the long-pending demands, especially special zone status in accordance with the provisions of A.P. Reorganisation Act. There was no mention of any new trains, lines and plans about addressing pending projects in the State.
Perhaps, this was the first time that A.P. was not sanctioned any trains or any announcements specific to the State. It was disappointing, said Mr. Reddy.
Kesineni Nani: Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) said the Central government presented an innovative budget by deviating from usual trend of announcing new projects and trains. The government emphasised on completion of ongoing projects, safety and better facilities to passengers. Kudos to the Central government, he said.
K. Ramakrishna: CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna said the Modi government disappointed Andhra Pradesh. Except funds for Vijayawda-Kazipeta third line, there was no mention of new trains, lines, or projects, he said..
Y.V. Subba Reddy: Ongole MP and YSRC leader Y.V. Subba Reddy said the Centre had shown an ‘empty hand’ to beleaguered Andhra Pradesh in general and Prakasam district in particular.
Except for not hiking railway passenger fares, there was nothing positive in the budget at a time when people were expecting funds for Srikalahasti-Nadikudi railway lane, he said.
P. Madhu: CPI (M) State secretary P. Madhu said Centre presented a bankrupt railway budget.
He said the Minister had announced logistic parks and port connectivity through PPP.
These projects were aimed at privatisation of logistic services, the CPI(M)leader said.
