Demanding that the Union government implement the recommendations made by the Law Commission in 2015 to contain defection of parties by elected representatives, Jana Chaitanya Vedika (JCV), an NGO, is going to conduct a series of seminars in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Hyderabad.

Unethical practices

The seminars on ‘Defection of Parties- Democracy in Danger’ are intended to create awareness among people against the unethical practices of MLAs being endorsed by Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as to mount pressure on the Union government, said former MLC K.S. Lakshman Rao.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Lakshman Rao said that the Law Commission recommended that President and respective State Governors must be given power to contain defections of MPs and MLAs respectively and the Election Commission must be consulted before taking a decision. All these must be implemented in the wake of increasing defections and misuse of powers of Speakers who are leaned towards a party, he added. On June 19, seminar would be held at Makineni Basava Punnaiah Hall here. Later on June 26, seminar would be held in Visakhapatnam, on July 3 in Tirupati and on July 31 in Hyderabad. Various experts, including former civil servant E.A.S. Sarma, former Speaker A. Eswar Reddy, former Law Commission chairperson and Supreme Court judge justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy, and others will take part.

JCV State president V. Lakshman Reddy and Jana Vignana Vedika State leader J. Krishna Kishore were present.
