Gastric banding, gastric sleeve resection, gastric balloon, gastric bypass, and now the latest in bariatric surgery — gastric imbrication — has come for patients.
Livlife Hospitals, a highly specialised concept hospital, which performs these procedures, has entered into a tie up with Time Hospital here, but it has also established premises of its own in Suryaraopet. Depending on the necessity, surgeons will perform one of the procedures on an obesity patient.
Bariatric surgeon Nandakishore Dukkipati, addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, said gastric imbrication was the latest technique in bariatric surgery. In this procedure, the stomach was folded and stitched to reduce its size.
The surgery was reversible and could be customised to the patients’ needs.
Wide experience
Dr. Nandakishore said he had the wide experience of performing 3,700 bariatric surgeries in his career. He performed 3,000 of them in the United States working at hospitals in New York and Dallas and another 700 at the Hyderabad Livlife Hospital.
Several movie stars and models benefited from his experience.
He was the only certified bariatric surgeon in Andhra Pradesh with a Diploma from the American Board of Surgery (DABS) and was a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), he said.
He said that 27 per cent of men were obese and faced several health risks. Bariatric surgery was a fool-proof method of resolving the problem of obesity.
Similarly 22 per cent of the women and 16 to 17 per cent of children were obese.
Dubious distinction
Andhra Pradesh ranked 5th after Punjab and other States in obesity.
He said several of the cases that he treated at Hyderabad were from Guntur, Vijayawada, and the Godavari districts. He said the Livlife Hospitals had the pleasant atmosphere of a boutique, but the patients need not stay there for more than two days.
The USP of Livlife was the availability of all specialities under one roof at one time.
