Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has said the proposal to accord national project status to Polavaram project is being taken up by the Union Government.

Replying to a letter by Nama Nageshwar Rao, Telugu Desam MP on Wednesday seeking national status to Polavaram and Pranahita-Chevella projects , Mr Bansal said the comments of the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Tribal Affairs, as required by the Expenditure & Finance Committee (EFC) of the Finance Ministry, had been received.

The proposal was being submitted to the EFC for consideration. After approval of the EFC, the project would require approval of the Union Cabinet for being included in the scheme of national projects.

On Pranahita-Chevella, the minister said the project would require investment clearance from the Planning Commission to become eligible for inclusion in the national projects scheme.
