April 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

National Alliance of People’s Movements and its associate organisations are planning a demonstration in Parliament Street in New Delhi on May 5, protest against large-scale land acquisition by the government for various projects.

“We are expecting thousands of farmers from Bhogapuram, Kovvada and Somepeta where plans are underway to set up power plants , to build pressure on the Centre to halt the ‘development’ plans that will adversely affect the people ,” said B. Ramakrishnam Raju, national convenor of NAPM.

At Bhogapuram, the government proposes to acquire 15,000 acres for a greenfield airport, a move that has triggered protests by the locals. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is setting up a 10,000 MW nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district for which 2,000 acres would be acquired. Mr. Raju says at Thullur, farmers have started putting pressure on the government to give back their lands that were taken from them for capital.
