Nandigama in Krishna district, 80 km from here, is all set to get an outdoor stadium along with an indoor one on the Zilla Parishad School premises. District Collector M. Buddha Prakash Jyothi has instructed the Mandal Revenue Officer to conduct the land alienation feasibility study and later hand it over to the District Sports Authority, according to District Sports Development Officer P. Ramakrishna.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Mr. Ramakrishna said that administrative sanction has already been given for the construction of the stadium and Rs. 2.10 crore has been released. “The stadium will be constructed by the Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation on the six-acre site and the indoor stadium will have facilities for badminton and table tennis. A 400-m athletic track and a pavilion along with facilities for kho kho, volleyball, basketball and kabaddi will come up at the outdoor stadium,” he added.
He said that as per the GO. No. 2 dated January 18 all the new ventures and renovation works to the existing stadiums will be taken by the Housing Corporation.
Mr. Ramakrishna said that Nandigama was a favourite venue for sports as many fixtures of Krishna University and the various district associations were held. “The stadium will be of immense help to people of Kanchekacharla, Chandralapadu and the neighbouring villages as the youth can make use of the facilities,” he added.
He said that proposals for laying a synthetic athletic track at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada and an astro turf for hockey at Makineni Basavapunnaiah Stadium at Singhnagar were sent to the Collector. “These two ventures will be taken up under the Urban Development Sports Infrastructure scheme of the Central Government.
“Under this scheme a State government can allot two districts for sprucing up sporting facilities,” Mr. Ramakrishna said. Explaining about the new proposals for the district, he said two mini stadiums were planned at Gannavaram and Jaggaiahpet.
