Officials of the Labour Department conducted a special drive and defaced the English name boards put up in front of shops, hotels, and other establishments, in the city on Saturday.
A team of officials led by Additional Commissioner of Labour Y. Surya Prasad, Deputy Commissioner Labour S.Y. Srinivas, Assistant Commissioner of Labour D. Anjaneya Reddy, Assistant Labour Officers and other staff participated in the drive.
The officials defaced the name boards that were in English on either sides of M.G. Road near Benz Circle. They appealed to the owners to write the boards in Telugu and give priority to the local language.
Mr. Prasad said the Labour Department verified 10,501 shops in December last year and asked the owners who displayed boards in English language to replace them with Telugu boards. However, only 10,139 owners replaced the boards.
Under the AP Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, all hotels, shops, and establishment owners should write the name boards in Telugu only. Action would be taken under the Act if the owners did not write the boards in the local language immediately, Mr. Reddy warned.
