Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad has inaugurated a RoB connecting the Milk Factory and Nainavaram, popularly known as Nainavaram flyover.

The flyover that is named after former MLA Chanumolu Venkat Rao was formally thrown open for public on Sunday in the presence of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who unveiled a statue of Venkat Rao installed on the flyover.

Both the leaders later unveiled the statue of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, at Budameru Katta.

Locals, led by the TDP, the CPI and the CPI(M), staged a sit-in protesting against the visiting dignitaries. CPI city secretary K. Subba Raju, CPI(M) State committee member Ch. Babu Rao, and TDP leader G. Chinna alleged that the Chief Minister was disinclined to accept a memorandum from the Budameru victims.

The government's apathy and Mr. Reddy's reaction to their plight forced them to stage a sit-in, they said.

The flyover was constructed at a cost of Rs.37.61 crore. The R&B spent Rs.20 crore and the Railways contributed the remaining Rs.17.81 crore.

The flyover had four approaches. While one approach from the Wagon Workshop was constructed by the Railways for its own use, the approach from the Gollapudi side of the city was 449.80-metre-long, and the third was 436.2-metre-long from the Vissannapet side.

A trumpet approach, which is nearing completion, of a length of 249 metres is designed to enable the traffic coming from Chittinagar and One Town to get on to the flyover. There is a steep and short 270-metre-long branch for the traffic bound for the One Town area and wanting to get off the flyover.

All these approaches together come to 1,396 metres. The main flyover from the Kabela side to the Nainavaram side has a length of about 1,100 metres.
