An ideal site for the temporary camp office-cum-secretariat of Chief Minister-designate N. Chandrababu Naidu could be decided only after the annual Mahanadu slated for May 27 and 28 at Gandipet in Hyderabad, according to a top police official.
Speculation is rife that the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) in Guntur may be converted into a temporary camp office of Mr. Naidu but the district officials have no confirmation so far. “We spoke to senior officials in Hyderabad who said that a decision will be taken only after Mahanadu,” a top police official in the district said.
In the event of any such development, officials from the State Intelligence wing would have visited the university to study the feasibility option but that has not happened so far. Since Mr. Naidu is in the Z plus category, top police officials from Hyderabad are bound to visit the university to collect feedback.
“We have no information about it. Even authorities at the police headquarters in Hyderabad did not confirm it,” the official said.
The officer suspects role of a few realtors behind such rumours. “They want to encash on the hype generated over ANU as the proposed camp office of the new CM,” he says. A venture developed by a real-estate firm had no takers but the flats sold like hot cakes in the wake of these rumours. In the last two days, close to 50 flats were sold, he said.
Confusion reigns supreme among ANU officials while students, teaching and non-teaching staff are gearing up to protest the move. “We’ll start with a pen-down strike and the agitation will continue with a black-badge protest, dharnas and indefinite strike,” ANU Parirakshana Samithi leader Y. Venkatappa Reddy said.
He said the newly-elected representatives would be urged not to disturb academic atmosphere in the university. A few student unions also have decided to support the agitation, Mr. Reddy said.
