While paying rich tributes to police martyrs on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day here on Tuesday, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a welfare fund with a corpus of Rs 10 crore and sought to use latest technologies for making Andhra Pradesh police the best in the country.

He said maintaining law and order, controlling crime and investigations became a huge burden on the police personnel but they worked with great commitment for societal well-being. Some police units were doing commendable job in spite of the adversities, he said.

“From chain snatching to cyber crimes, the challenges are manifold. Women are under increasing threat of sexual abuse. The government is concerned with such incidents and is committed to curbing this menace and other social evils”, Mr. Naidu said and exuded confidence that with the efficient police officers and staff that A.P has, reaching the goals would not be impossible.

Mr. Naidu further said some Congress leaders have treated police personnel as sentries at their houses rather than use them for public good whereas former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao initiated reforms which improved the efficiency of A.P police.

“Except factionalism in a couple of Rayalaseema districts, the situation in Andhra Pradesh is peaceful as people want to live in harmony and will not foment any trouble. With this kind of healthy atmosphere, it will be easy to achieve development. On their part, the police have to win people’s confidence through friendly conduct and promptly solving their problems. Community policing would forge friendly ties between police and public, Mr. Naidu added.

Director General of Police J.V. Ramudu said more than the enemy at borders, internal forces inimical to the country made policing an extremely difficult job but the police were as committed as ever to their duties. The tactics and strategies of police are far better than they were previously, he added.

Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao and Eluru Range DIG S. Hari Kumar were among senior police officers present. Earlier, Mr. Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister N. Chinarajappa released a book on ‘Police Martyrs of A.P’ brought out by the publishers of police magazine ‘Suraksha’.
