The two children -- Ramakrishna Reddy (4) and his sister Jagruthi (2) -- whose throats were slit by their mother in Khammam district on Sunday, are battling for life in a private hospital here.
The woman, B. Saritha, attempted to kill her children by slitting their tracheas and end her own life by cutting her throat in Nagupalli village of Dammapeta mandal. They were admitted to Andhra Hospitals in Vijayawada on Sunday evening.
The doctors, who were treating the mother and the children in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), said the condition of Saritha and her daughter is out of danger. Ramakrishna is under ventilator and is battling for life.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Andhra Hospitals Duty Medical Officer Ravindranath said the three patients were admitted to the hospital at around 4.30 a.m. in a serious condition and the doctors performed tracheal reconstruction for both the babies.
Dr. Ravindranath said the injuries to the trachea may affect their speech in future. The DMO said it was too early to make a statement on the condition of the patients.
ICU in-charge V. Murali Krishna opined that the ENT specialists performed tracheotomy operations (bypassing the air supply through alternative tubes) on both the children.
“As the injuries to the windpipe were major, it may cause speech problem to the children. The condition of the boy is still critical,” said Dr. Murali Krishna.
