‘More organ donors needed to save lives’

August 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:24 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

While 1.5 lakh patients need kidneys in the country, only 3,000 were fortunate to find donors. The gap between requirement and availability would not decrease unless more people volunteered to donate their organs, said speakers at an awareness meeting organised jointly by Ramesh Group of Hospitals and the Young Indians of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Saturday.

Ramesh Hospitals Neurosurgery Department Head Major General (retd) S Kumaravelu, managing consultant M C Das, Young Indians CII members D Anvesh, N.Phaniram and P Ravi Kumar stressed the importance of organ donation. While 25,000 patients required liver transplantation only 800 could find donors.

Dr Kumaravelu said that in Coimbatore 13,000 organ donors registered on one day creating a new world record. He said people of Vijayawada should strive to break this record.
