Former National Women’s Commission Chairperson V. Mohini Giri has advocated speedy trial in cases of atrocities against women by asking people to demand for Grameen Courts.
Delivering the 5 Annual Oration on Women Empowerment here on Friday, she told a large gathering of women that she had met All Indian Congress Committee President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to impress upon her to get the 33 per cent Reservation for women in legislative bodies by ensure passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha Monsoon Session scheduled to begin on August 5.
Making an inspiring speech at the oration organised by Chennupati Seshagiri Rao Memorial Charitable Trust, she urged all women to equip themselves with education and become lawyers, doctors and engineers to offset the disadvantage they faced in the `Patriarchal Society’. “There will be 100 Billion people by 2020 and family care will become the key issue. Dropping and Day Care Centres for the elderly need to be developed by the NGOs like Vasavya Mahila Mandali,” she said and volunteered to come back to Vijayawada to inaugurate one such soon. She took strong objection to the educated women stopping their studies or giving up employment to become home-makers or to bring up children. “Go ahead and utilize your knowledge and studies in jobs and earn economical independence for yourself,” she said.
She also had a recipe for young girls and women moving on the streets and advised them to carry Chilly Powder with them to use against men, who try to misbehave with them or try to outrage their modesty, by terming it as the best defence. “If girls from Andhra Pradesh cannot do it, none can do it as this part of the State known for its Chillies,” she observed.
She gave away cash assistance to some students, who were economically disadvantaged and were being supported by Chennupati Charitable Trust. Former MP Chenupati Vidya and other trustees also spoke on the occasion.
