A spell of moderate to heavy rain fall lashed many parts of the Guntur district on Monday.
While the spell of rain was believed to be useful for paddy farmers who have completed the transplantation exercises, the flood waters breached a few causeways snapping off road links to Tadikonda, Amaravathi and for few hours, to Hyderabad.
The road link was snapped between Piduguralla-Macherla, between 11 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. when the existing bridge was washed away by the overflowing waters at Tummala Cheruvu.
Emergency work was taken up on the approach road to the new bridge which was opened in the afternoon paving the way for the traffic to resume on the busy State highway.
Road link to the temple town of Amaravathi was snapped following the overflowing of Narakulla drain and road links to Mandepuram and Ponnekallu were also cut off.
Meanwhile, the rain revived the hopes of farmers in Krishna Western Delta and breathed life into the parched landscape. Farmers who have already completed transplantation exercises seemed to benefit from the spell of rain.
But for the tail-end areas who depend on the availability of water in the Kommamuru canal, which has stabilised an ayacut of about 2 lakh in Repalle, Bapatla and Prakasam Districts. The present water flow in the canal is about 2,500 cusecs which has been hardly sufficient to raise the crop. The farmers were hoping that a few days of rain might raise the flow in Kommamuru canal.
For the record, the district received an average rainfall of 69.8 m.m. with 56 mandals receiving in excess of 20 m.m. Nuzendla mandal recorded the highest rainfall of 224.2 m.m., followed by P.V. Palem 158.2 m.m and Nagaram 128.6 m.m. Rentachintala mandal recorded the lowest rain fall of 18.7 m.m. The average rainfall recorded for the first three days of September was 70.2 .m. which is almost half of average for the month at 145.4 m.m.
