MLC polls peaceful barring minor incidents

Elections to Krishna-Guntur and Godavari districts’ teachers’ constituencies of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council passed off peacefully barring minor incidents on Sunday.

Guntur district recorded a polling percentage of 72.7 while Krishna registered 65.2. Polling was held in 110 stations in Krishna and Guntur districts and in 117 in East and West Godavari districts.

Out of 9,762 voters in Krishna district, 6,367 exercised their franchise. The highest number of teachers (2,699) who exercised their right was in Vijayawada division and it was followed by Gudivada (1,375), Nuzvid (1,351) and Machilipatnam (949) divisions.

Tension prevailed for while at Pushpa Hotel Centre in Vijayawada city as TDP and CPI (M) activists clashed over allegations of distribution of money on behalf of the TDP-supported candidate A.S. Ramakrishna. Three persons accused of luring the voters with money were taken into custody by the police.

Sitting MLC K. S. Lakshman Rao lodged a complaint in this regard with the police and an inquiry has been ordered by the District Collector Ahmed Babu. He visited some polling stations in Vijayawada, Kankipadu and Penamalur.

Guntur District Collector Kantilal Dande monitored the conduct of elections and personally visited a few polling stations in Guntur and Chilakaluripet. In West Godavari district, 7,404 teachers cast their votes out of the total number of 9,375.

The polling percentage stood at 78.97.

East and West Godavari districts recorded a polling percentage of 83.11. Of the 21,551 voters in both districts, 18,040 cast their votes. EG Collector H. Arun Kumar, who is also the Returning Officer, monitored the polling through web-casting.
