The city will witness Mini National Archery Championship for the under-14 boys and girls for the sixth time in a row in which as many as 15 teams are expected to take part, according to organising secretary Cherukuri Satyanarayana here on Wednesday.

Each team with 24 archers will participate in the Indian round, compound and recurve events from April 10 to 13 at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium. “This event has produced several archers who went on become top archers in all three segments — sub junior, junior and senior categories. Archers like Ch. Jignas, Ritul Chatterjee won Commonwealth Games silver medal for the country. Youngsters like Jyothi Surekha, Jyoshna, Purvasha Shinde and Geethika made a mark in the national and in the international events,” said Mr Satyanarayana.

He said the event which was restricted to archers under 13 years was extended to 14 years under the instruction of the World Archery Association. He said some States were failed to make it to the tournament owing to general elections

The tournament which was supposed to be held in 2013 was postponed owing to the agitation against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. “This tournament is the platform from which the future faces of the Indian archery can be identified,” said general secretary of Archery Association of India Anil Kamineni.

AAI observer C. Pramod from Maharashtra will supervise the conduct of the event.

VMC commissioner Harikiran will inaugurate the event.
