Timely payment of bills and honorarium, cooking sheds, cooking gas cylinders, and utensils have been demanded by Andhra Pradesh Mid-Day Meal Scheme Workers’ Union.
Members of the union staged a dharna on Thursday to highlight their demands at the Municipal Corporation School at Jemmi Chettu Centre.
Union leader Sivanagamani said bills were pending for the past three months and mid-day meal scheme workers had been waiting with patience.
‘No facilities’
There are 204 schools in which the scheme is being implemented. Many of the schools do not have cooking sheds.
Some do not have gas cylinders and some others do not have utensils. “The government should provide these in respective schools,” she demanded.
Ms. Sivanagamani said several allegations were being made against the mid-day meal scheme workers. There was a report in the media about workers conniving with teachers to deprive children of the meal.
She said workers were borrowing from outside to keep the scheme running. The price of eggs shot up. So, additional amounts should be sanctioned so that nutritive food could be served. The union planned to stage more such dharnas until their demands were met.
