‘Padma Shri’ Dr. Kirpal Singh Chugh, Emeritus Professor of Nephrology at Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, said a lot of research being carried out in the country was wasted because the Indian medical scientists were trying to copy their western counterparts and were only duplicating the work being done outside.
Most of the institutions lacked the necessary facilities and new modes of treatment have gone beyond the reach of the majority due to high costs, he observed.
Delivering the convocation address on ‘Science, Medicine and Society’ after receiving honorary degree of Doctor of Sciences at the 18th and 19th annual convocation of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) from its Chancellor and Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, E.S.L. Narasimhan here on Wednesday, Dr. Chugh said “We do not even know the prevalence and pattern of several diseases in the country. Our medical scientists are facing a tremendous challenge posed by constraints of health infrastructure and financial resources, dearth of modern equipment and high cost of technology for diagnosis and management.”
