The Hindu, in association with CHAMPS, organises awareness programme

A major dilemma among high school students wishing to pursue a course in accountancy is which combination to choose in Intermediate or degree.

This doubt was clarified by some of the finest Chartered Accountant practising in India and working for some of the multi-national companies of the world by asking them to go for MEC as physics and chemistry in MPC group are of no use, while mathematics was an essential basic part of learning process. At an awareness programme conducted by The Hindu, in association with Chanakya Academy of Management and Professional Studies (CHAMPS) on Sunday, its Director R. Sasi Kumar said.

It is a myth that people from the MPC background cannot succeed in accountancy field, but MEC group might help some of them, the Director said, while emphasising the need for concept-based learning and not learning topics by heart.

At the interactive session of the awareness programme answering students’ questions on could the international courses like CMA (U.S.A) be pursued in India?, Mr. Sasi Kumar said that most of the international courses were being offered at their institute and even the exams could be written in India at a place of their choice.

This international CA would come in handy for the students to earn a job in multi-national companies that deal with accounting process in several different locations all over the world, he added.

When a student wanted to know if an average student could take up Chartered Accountancy, he said that the classification of bright, average and below average was very unscientific. Every student was capable of achieving heights, determination, focus and right direction were needed.

Finance Head of a software MNC, A. Prasad told students that careers in finance and accounting were not limited to pure accounting/audit/taxation.

Information Technology (IT) sector required scores of finance professionals for process controls, system development and ERP applications. Unlike others, a professional accountant could choose from a wide variety of areas for employment.

Bangalore-based Kennametal CFO Parameshwar Reddy gave a long list of job portfolios, designation and positions that an accountancy professional could get. Among them, he said, Forensic Accounting, which looks for frauds committed by the companies or individuals in their accounts and brings out the facts from a maze of figures.
