Yellasri Sharat Reddy, who was arrested on charges of supplying arms to the CPI-ML New Democracy Naxalites, was an expert in making weapons and have been supplying guns to the extremists for the past few years.

The West Godavari Police recently arrested Sharat Reddy, who completed his masters in business administration. They also arrested a workshop owner, G. Shiva Nagaraju, and worker Antony for allegedly helping Sharat Reddy. The incident, which startled the locals, raised several questions on the credibility of ‘intelligence network’ of the City Police. However, the investigating authorities, who inquired into the movements of the accused, came to a conclusion that the accused was having links with a few other workshop owners in the city.

According to sources, Sharat Reddy, who was associated with the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) for some time, developed contacts with the underground cadre of the CPI-ML New Democracy. A native of Sulluripet in Nellore district, he moved to Vijayawada and rented a house in Auto Nagar in 2008.

Sharat Reddy came in contact of New Democracy (Chandranna dalam) member Venkateswara Rao, a few years ago. Chandranna dalam, a splinter group of the CPI (ML)-ND, is active in Buttaigudem, Yellandu and other parts in Khammam and West Godavari districts.

“Sharat Reddy rented a house on the pretext of making ice cream cones. He collected the used components from different workshops and manufactured weapons. He almost turned his house into a workshop,” West Godavari District Superintendent of Police K. Raghu Ram Reddy told The Hindu.

Police seized models of Stun gun, Calibre and SLR and designs of some magazines, springs, some machines and others components.

Sharat Reddy, who worked in foundries earlier, learnt techniques of moulding metal components and he used the same technology for making weapons.

“The accused has been supplying weapons to Naxalites for the last five years. During interrogation, he confessed to have supplied nearly 35 guns. Sharat Reddy is trying to make new model weapons too,” said the SP.
