Maris Stella College, as the first college for girls in Krishna District, is playing an important role in spreading the concept of education and also sports, according to Krishna District Basketball Association president Bonda Uma Maheswara Rao.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the State-level three day basketball tournament for women at the college premises on Wednesday, Mr. Rao appreciated the college management for choosing basketball as part of its golden jubilee celebrations of the college and its measures to promote the sporting culture among the girls.
Fr. Stanley Dhanpal, national secretary, Xavier Board of Higher Education, advised the management to conduct more such events in the future.
Mr. N. Srinivasa Rao, coordinator, Sports, Krishna University, Rajendra Prasad, coach, Sports Authority of India and Md. Yonus, retired SAAP coach took part in the function. The tournament is being played under the floodlights and as many as 40 matches are scheduled for the three days.
“Eight districts – Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Kurnool, Anantapur, Krishna, Vizag, Guntur and East Godavari are taking part in the tourney, supervised by the qualified referees of Basketball Federation of India.
