The exclusive cricket stadium coming up at Mangalagiri in Guntur district will be the hub of training activities for all age groups, according to Andhra Cricket Association director (operations) and former India International M.S.K. Prasad.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, Mr. Prasad said that the stadium was being constructed in a phased manner and in the first phase an indoor stadium, a residential complex and ‘B' ground will be built. The second phase will witness the construction of the main stadium with galleries, staff quarters and in the final phase, we will take up the sprucing up of club house. All these facilities will be put in place in two years.

Delay

He said that the work has taken a backseat as the Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority has to clear certain drawings and has asked for more detailed blue prints for the future projects. “Once they are finalised, we can resume our work,” he said.

Both ACA president S.L. Narayana Row and secretary Gokaraju Ganga Raju are keen to complete the task. “The ACA can stake a claim to host an international match once all these facilities are completed,” he added. The ACA elections are scheduled for July and the progress will depend on the next set of office-bearers taking office.

The stadium, coming up on 24 acres, once completed, will be a boon for the young cricketers as they can hone skills without any hindrance. “We can accommodate 80 players along with other support staff.

With all the facilities including kitchen available the cricketers can stay and practice with total dedication,” Mr. Prasad felt.

Former Andhra skipper and stadium in-charge K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that seven pitches were already put to use as majority of matches of Guntur District Cricket Association were held there last year successfully.

“Youngsters love to play here as the ambiance gives them the extra motivation to perform well,” he observed. The State camp for under-14 players was held successfully last month.

This stadium will be of immense help to players from the coastal Andhra as they can fine-tune their skills under the watchful eyes of qualified coaches under one roof.
