It was an unusual buzz generated by participants of ‘Samanvay 2010', the annual management meet hosted by the department of business administration of Maris Stella College, on Wednesday. The excitement was a welcome substitute for the customary tranquillity pervading the campus.

Teeming with activity, the event brought some of the best brains from various management institutions to the venue. Close to 400 participants, drawn from 30-odd colleges, created a synergy that resulted in a host of intellectually stimulating events.

Four teams representing different colleges were seated on the dais for the final round of business quiz. N. Vijay Kumar and G. Veerakoteswara Rao of Nova PG College, Ibrahimpatnam, K. Naga Sudha and Praveen of MVR College, C. Swathi and K. Silpa of Vijaya Institute of Technology for Women, Enikepadu and M. Saroja and Nivas of T.J.P.S College, Guntur, were locked in a battle of wits.

Good response

Besides the question-answer round, the contestants had to identify brand logos, taglines and put their memory to test by recollecting a list of products displayed on the screen. Queries tossed at the audience drew an overwhelming response with girls and boys vying with one another to answer first. To test the business acumen and creative zeal of the participants, events like ‘market maniacs', ‘finance game', ‘ad blazon', ‘business plan' and ‘young manager' came in handy for the organisers to access their aptitude. “Rock the floor”, a group and solo dance presentation, marked the valediction of the day-long gathering.

Gaddam Subba Rao, president of the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who was chief guest of the event, said trade awareness was key to success for those pursuing a course in business administration. Citing his own example, he said in addition to a degree, practical knowledge of the market scenario was essential.

“Babai hotel idli, Kakinada kaza and Pullareddy sweets are famous not because the owners are highly qualified but because they have business sense. They understand the pulse of the people and the tastes they prefer,” he maintained. Mr. Subba Rao assured all help to students who were keen on assessing the wholesale and retail market scenario.

Principal Japamalai said such events played vital role in shaping the career of MBA students. K. Naga Sundari, head of MBA programme, and others coordinated the event.
