A degree dropout girl and her boyfriend landed in jail for allegedly resorting to thefts at busy junctions and moving buses in the city. The ‘lovers’ are said to have committed a series of offences in the few years to afford lavish life.

Nukala Durga Bhavani, who discontinued her graduation, fell in love with Dasari Krishnam Raju, who had completed ITI. The lure for easy money prompted them to commit thefts to meet their expenses. The girl would move in busy local RTC buses and autos, and target the passengers at the bus terminals. She would skilfully open the wallets of commuters, rob cellphones, jewellery, cash and get down at some point.

Later, she would handover the booty to Raju who would sell it in the market. The duo used to frequent posh hotels, restaurants and showrooms. The Central Crime Station (CCS) police team, led by SI B. Krishna Kumar, kept a watch at bus stops and on moving buses and arrested Durga Bhavani, who confessed to the crime. Based on the information provided by her, police apprehended her boyfriend and recovered 14 sovereigns of gold ornaments, four tolas of silver jewellery, 11 cellphones and Rs. 41,000 in cash, all worth around Rs. 4 lakh.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, CCS, G. Ramakoteswara Rao, who supervised the investigation, said that Durga Bhavani was arrested while she was moving suspiciously near the Apsara Theatre on Eluru Road.

“Durga Bhavani committed thefts in Bhavanipuram, Krishnalanka, Machavaram, Penamaluru, Satyanarayanapuram and other areas. She is wanted in seven cases,” said Mr. Rao.
