The Drug Inspector of Narsaraopet in Guntur district following a directive from the local court searched the premises of seven drugs and chemists' shops in the town on Monday and temporarily suspended the licences of five shops. Drug Inspector M. Chandrasekhar along with other staff searched the shops and closed five of them and also suspended their licences till they got clarifications on certain issues.

They, however, did not confiscate any stocks.

Lok Satta Organisation has been seeking an explanation from the Drugs Control Administration Department as to why no inspection was carried out on about 400 shops for five years and alleged that Narsaraopet turned out to be a nerve centre of production of spurious drugs and sale. About 55 hospitals also alleged to have been selling drugs without licence.

There were cases against some druggists and chemists, but they were later closed, LSO alleged.LSO activists Ganta Nirmala, K.V. Chalamaiah, Narasimha Rao, and N. Rama Rao have been working on the issue.
