The Left parties staged a protest at the Gandhi statue here on Tuesday demanding an immediate announcement on the railway zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

The participants came down heavily on BJP for its failure to keep the election promises and TDP for its failure to insist on their implementation.

The participants in the protest, organised under the aegis of the city units of Community Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist), raised slogans accusing BJP of ‘cheating’ the people by failing to implement the 2014 election promises. They said that BJP leaders had garnered votes after promising to get a new railway zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam. After winning the elections, they were reneging on their promise on the railway zone and were now saying that it was not possible.

The Left leaders criticised the Modi government for throwing cold water on the aspirations of the youth of North Andhra region, who were hoping that they would get jobs once the railway zone was granted. Visakhapatnam has all the amenities needed for setting up of the new zone but the Modi government’s lack of commitment would not be tolerated. They said that the BJP State president and Visakhapatnam MP, MLA and MLC of BJP had all won on the false promise of securing the zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam. The Left leaders also flayed the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for failing to take up the issue with the Centre.

The three BJP leaders from the city owe an explanation to the people of the region for failing to implement their election promise. They called upon the people to pull them up when they come for votes and teach the BJP a lesson.

CPI(M) city secretary B. Ganga Rao, CPI city secretary M. Pydiraju and members V. Krishna Rao, J.D. Naidu, Satyanjaneyulu, P. Eswar Rao and Rambabu were among those who participated in the protest.
