The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI(M) staged a dharna in front of the milk factory here on Wednesday opposing the hike in milk prices. Addressing the gathering, CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar, CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao and others said that the Krishna Milk Union has hiked the prices thrice in a year for which it cited the rise in operation and maintenance expenses as the reason.

The Union was passing the burden onto customers saying it increased milk procurement price. The city people were using five lakh litres of milk every day and a Rs. 2 hike would be a burden of Rs. 2 crore per month, they said, adding, “The TDP has been promising that it would slash the prices and bring down the prices of essential commodities. How can it do if the dairy headed by a TDP leader was set on a hiking spree?”

Roll-back demanded

The agitators demanded that the Krishna Milk Union should roll back its decision to hike milk price by Rs. 2 in all categories of milk. Children would be deprived of balanced diet due to increase in price.
