A leader should not only think about the present problems but also about the future ones as merely by solving the present ones he or she cannot get away from the long-term troubles, according to Radhakrishnan Pillai, author of the best-seller Corporate Chanakya and founder-director of Chanakya Institute of Public Leaderships, a leadership academy which trains political leaders and aspirants, here on Thursday.
Speaking in an interactive programme, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in its Young India (YI) learning series, he highlighted nuances of business practices interspersed with examples and audio-visual presentations.
He said that more than a king in business one should strive hard to become a kingmaker. “Just being a leader in corporate world is not enough. One should transform into a mentor and help others run the business effectively. The first stage in the corporate worlds is learn and next is to teach,” he pointed out.
Dr. Pillai said the corporate world should learn to solve both the internal and external problems simultaneously. “In business, we have to deal with both local and global issues.”
Chanakya’s intelligence
He gave an example of how the great Indian philosopher Chankaya united the country against the global invader Alexander the Great. “It is because of one man’s intelligence; Alexander showed his back without waging a war against India. This was possible because of the effective communication. He used his good offices and united the princely states to terrify the invader.”
The management guru said the most important ingredient of modern business was to understand the local culture and develop a local model. For this one had to imbibe multi-lingual skills and understand many cultures to sustain for many years.
He exhorted the young entrepreneurs to constantly do research in their respective industries by reading journals and getting connected to the world.
