Krishna district sees increase in cases of crime against women

15 women died due to dowry harassment in the city in 2012

There is an increase in the number of cases related to atrocities on women, domestic violence, and attacks on girls in Krishna district. As many as 97 rape cases were reported in the district during 2012.

In Vijayawada city, 1,860 cases related to harassment and atrocities against women were registered, while only 1,704 were reported during 2011. Fifteen women died due to dowry harassment in the city this year and the number was 16 last year.

In all, 46 rape cases were reported in the Police Commissionerate limits during 2012, of which 35 cases were of minor girls being subjected to rape on the pretext of marriage.

Police opened rowdy sheets against 87 persons and suspect sheets against 361 persons for resorting to eve-teasing at public places in the city. Patrolling was arranged at schools and colleges, bus stops and other places with Blue Colts police to prevent teasing of women and girls, said the police.

In Krishna district, 51 rape cases were registered up to October this year. Police arrested the accused in 34 cases and the cases were under trial.

As many as 604 dowry harassment cases were reported in Machilipatnam, Nuzvid, Avanigadda, and Gudivada divisions in the district. Fourteen dowry deaths were reported in the district, the police added.

Besides, several cases of kidnap were booked in Vijayawada Commissionerate and Krishna District during 2012.

The alleged sexual harassment of students in MJM Vocational Junior College hostel in the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate limits created sensation in the city. Police arrested three persons, including a woman, in the case.

Remains a mystery

The suspicious death of an SSC student, P. Pallavi (15), in her hostel room in Pamarru village, remains a mystery till today. The girl was found hanging on the school premises on October 30.

The girl’s parents staged a dharna in front of the school and lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Pallavi was raped and murdered.

Speaking to The Hindu , Krishna district Superintendent of Police J. Prabhakara Rao said that the police were waiting for DNA report in Pallavi’s case and that the case would be detected soon.
