Students of K.L. University in Vijayawada resorted to huge protest following the death of a student Nanda Kumar in a road accident on the approach road to the university the other day and a suicide attempt by a girl student, friend of the deceased on Monday.
Hundreds of K.L. University engineering college students came on to the roads in Kunchanapalli centre on Vijayawada-Guntur Highway demanding action against the warden of the women's hostel following a suicide attempt by a girl student.
Some senior students stopped buses at the Kunchenapalli centre and squatted on the road. They demanded that the College chairman Koneru Harin come to them and listen to their woes.
The irate students told The Hindu that a first year student mixed Dettol and nail polish and consumed it after the warden of the women's hostel humiliated her taking reference of her relationship with the deceased student G. Nanda Kumar. Students say that ill treatment of students by faculty was not new as two girl students attempted suicide earlier too after they were verbally abused by lecturers. The girl was being treated in the ICU of a hospital in Vijayawada they said.
Management apathy:
Kunchenapalli SI D. Naresh Kumar said that Nanda Kumar who lived in a private hostel in Kunchenapalli died when a fully loaded autorickshaw went over him. Accusing the university management's negligence in transporting the student to hospital within threshold time, Varaprasad, a student said that Nanda Kumar would have survived had the university been careful enough in arranging an ambulance. Though there were several accidents there was no ambulance was available in the college, he alleged.
The agitating students then walked several kilometers from Kunchenapalli centre to the gate of the college campus and squatted in protest demanding action against the warden and fix issues related to speed breakers and ambulance.
