Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu on Tuesday said that it was the responsibility of every citizen to keep the canals free from filth and garbage and advised them not to dump the waste paving way for the spread of diseases.
While supervising the ongoing cleaning operations in various canals in city, Mr. Babu said that efforts were on to control the mosquito menace by taking up anti-larval operations in the clogged canals.
Breeding grounds
The corporation has pressed into service extra staff to remove the plastic covers and other garbage that had become the breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The workers are also using the boats on Eluru Canal near Poornanamdampet for the cleaning operations.
Mr. Ravi Babu interacted with the engineering department officials for setting up a chain-linked mesh on both sides of the canals to prevent waste from entering the water body. “We can also set up a fence.
Ultimately it is the responsibility of the locals to keep the canals clean. Appropriate action will be taken against those who dump the waste in the canals,” he warned.
Anti-larval drive
He said that all the three canals -- Eluru, Ryves and Bundar – would witness intensified anti-larval activities in the next few days. He also inspected the road-relaying works on Sambamurthy Road and interacted with the officials.
He also inspected the ongoing civic works such as central lighting system near Alankar Centre.
