He came, he performed and he took the audience to a whole new world with his soul-stringing performance on Sarangi in a programme organised by the School of Planning and Architecture and Spic Macay, an outfit to promote Indian classical music and culture among youngsters at Siddhartha Auditorium on Tuesday.
Ustad Kamal Sabri’s sarangi recital was well received by the younger generation who took part in the Fest 2015.
Kamal, after a brief introduction about the instrument, began his rendezvous with music by performing the evening raaga - Madhuvanthi. He performed japtal and followed by teen-tal, which went down well with the audience.
Ably supporting the ustad on tabla was N. Javed from Hyderabad and N. Khan, his cousin on another sarangi.
Kamal rendered Rajasthani folk music much to the delight of the audience. He played a tune from Bollywood film Umrao Jaan and a Meera bhajan on a request from the audience.
Earlier, School of Planning and Architecture director N. Sridharan lighted the lamp along with the artistes to mark the commencement of the musical extravaganza,
A graded artist of All India Radio, Kamal has appeared in many radio ‘sangeet sammelans’ and national programmes. He won several awards and exhibited his musical skills in BBC, Radio France, Radio Pakistan, Radio Switzerland and Finnish Broadcasting Company. He also worked with renowned musicians like Zakir Hussain, Fateh Ali Khan, Hossam Ramzy, Talvin Singh, Taufiq Qureshi and bands like Massive Attack, One Giant Leap.
He gave his score in Hollywood films like Republic of Love, Winter of Love and Bollywood films like Khamosh , Pani and Par.
