March 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will dedicate the Kode Venkatadri Chowdary Campus of L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) to the State on Sunday.

This was announced by LVPEI associate director Avinash Pathange. LVPEI, which collaborates with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a mission to prevent blindness, has its flagship centre of excellence in Hyderabad, two tertiary care centres in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, 13 service centres and 114 primary care centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Dr. Pathange said. Two more primary care centres will be opened near Visakhapatnam soon, he added. The LVPEI campus in Vijayawada, which was established in 2011, offers eye care to close to two lakh persons. “Five-hundred corneal transplants were performed by the institute in the shortest possible time, and that was a record,” he said. The institute also provides direct services to over 1,000 villages.
