Thieves struck on a house in Penamaluru mandal on the outskirts of Vijayawada and decamped with 180 sovereigns of gold ornaments, valued at about ₹30 lakh.

According to the police, robbers looted the house belonging to M. Suresh Babu, located in PPR Colony, Kanuru village, under Penamaluru police station limits, when the family members were on a pilgrimage. The complainant, a hardware engineer, returned from Botswana recently.

On September 17, the family members went on pilgrimage and noticed the theft on Friday, after their return. Police suspect the role of car driver, Venkateswara Rao, who is at large, and his mobile phone is switched off.

“Thieves entered into the house by breaking open the locks, opened the iron safe and took away the valuables. Clues team and dog squad was pressed into service and efforts are on to identify the accused”, said Circle Inspector K. Damodar.
