A team from Japan will visit Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) at Ibrahimpatnam shortly.
The team will study the possibility of augmenting the capacity of the 210 MW thermal units at the station. On trial basis, they will study the unit-1 that was commissioned way back in 1980. The NTTPS would be able to add another 20 MW for this plant, according to NTTPS Chief Engineer G. Kishore Babu.
The NTTPS authorities were taking up the task as part of Renewal and Maintenance (R&M) of the unit-1, which is the oldest unit at the NTTPS.
If the Japan team's study were successful, it could be replicated to other units that had been functioning for more than 15 years.
The exact date of the Japan team's arrival was yet to be announced.
The Japanese team expressed interest in studying the feasibility to increase the capacity of the existing 210 MW plant.
There are six units with an installed capacity of 210 MW each at the NTTPS. Of which, the NTTPS recently took up the residual life extension of unit-5.
And it would take a month for the authorities to put it back in operation.
The authorities would open all parts of the plant, including turbine and generator and take up the capital overhaul.
The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) had supplied these equipments.
Overhauling work
The NTTPS would have to keep all spare parts ready before taking up overhauling work.
It required a near two-year plan for this kind of job as many factors such as budget, spare parts go into it, the CE explained.
The NTTPS would take up overhaul of the 500 MW seventh unit for the first time immediately after completion of fifth unit.
The seventh unit was commissioned in January 2010.
