Come summer, it’s time to take a plunge into swimming pools. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is readying the three municipal corporation swimming pools in the city for the month-long coaching camps beginning on May 1.

Sir Vizzi Municipal Corporation swimming pool at Gandhinagar and the pools at K.L. Rao Park in One-town and in Gurunanak Colony are likely to witness a beehive of activity with hundreds of children expected to take part in the camps. The corporation has fixed Rs. 400 as fee for month-long swimming coaching.

Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Z. Srinivas Rao, who is in charge of sports activities in the corporation, said that they were taking all the precautions for the successful conduct of the camp. Water will be filtered regularly along with chlorination.

The VMC was also arranging life guard rings as safety measure, he said.

Among all the sports and games segments, swimming has struck a chord with both parents and youngsters. There was a good response for swimming coaching compared to other sports. As the parents look for separate timings for the girls, a slot for them is created, he said.

The VMC would issue applications from May 1. The aspiring children would have to submit the application affixing two photographs along with a copy of date of birth certificate. The children would have to buy swimming goggles and a cap.

Swimming as a fitness activity is fast catching up among senior citizens as well and the pools too have a separate timing for them. The camps’ organisers have ensured that a slot was there for regular swimmers. The swimming timings at Sir Vizzi pool for regular swimmers are 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. in the morning and again in the evening from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
