Congress activists and leaders in the city on Wednesday celebrated the party’s victory with a thumping majority in the Karnataka Assembly elections.

Leaders and activists gathered at the city Congress office to share their joy. Sweets were distributed and crackers burst to let the world know that they had won and they were happy about it.

Krishna District Congress Committee president Naraharisetti Narasimha Rao, city committee president Adapa Nagendra, working president M. Rajeswara Rao, Vijayawada Parliament Constituency Youth Congress president Devineni Avinash and PCC secretary Kolanukonda Sivaji participated in the celebrations which involved the bursting of chains of fire crackers on the Congress Office Road.

The leaders said that the clear victory of the party in the Karnataka Assembly elections was a slap in the face that was trying to project the Congress-led government at the Centre as corrupt.

The thumping victory of the party in the wake of Youth Congress chairman Rahul Gandhi being elevated to vice-president of the party was not a mere co-incidence, Mr. Avinash said.

The BJP was saying that there was no one with the capacity to face Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the party candidate for the Prime Minister post, but the Congress party had Rahul Gandhi who was a better candidate.

Mr. Narasimha Rao, Mr. Nagendra and Mr. Rajeswara Rao said that the sweeping victory of the party in Karnataka was a shot in the arm for the Congress cadre.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana the party was bound to come back to power, they said.
